We're tying the knot
Derek & Alice
Alice and Derek met through their mutual friend, Leo, in first year at the University of British Columbia. While it wasn't love at first sight, they became good friends immediately as they shared similar background and hobbies.
They joined the same student club in summer 2009 and did many activities together: biking at Stanley Park, BBQ, kayaking, karaoke nights, potluck parties, house parties...
One day, Derek got really sick (hungover) after one of the parties (he claimed to have H1N1) and told Alice that he was in pain. As a good friend, Alice brought over hot soup and took care of him. Little did she know that small gesture would have changed both of their lives...
They began dating in November 2009. They have been through a lot together, watched each other grow, and shared many important milestones.
Derek got a job in Seattle and it marked the beginning of their semi-long-distance relationship. They felt fortunate that the distance between Vancouver and Seattle was close enough to allow them to still see each other every weekend.
As if Seattle and Vancouver weren't far enough, Alice moved to Bermuda for 5 months to work at her company's headquarter. Even so, their relationship remained strong as ever, and Derek also took the opportunity to experience the "Bermuda Triangle."
They continued traveling around the world together, visiting at least one new place every year. This is also the only time that they get to see each other every day, just like a normal couple.
For the past 6 years, Alice and Derek had been in a long-distance relationship. They took turns to drive to each other so that they could reunite every weekend.
On November 7, 2017, Derek finally proposed to Alice. He took her to a bridge at a resort in Thailand, kneeled down and asked her to be his wife.
Today, Alice and Derek still live in Vancouver and Seattle and reunite once a week. The distance has not stopped their commitment to each other. Instead, the bond they share grows stronger as time goes by. Collectively, they have driven more than 80,000 kms between the two cities over the last six years.
Of course, they look forward to the day when they can finally be together in one place!
